Proof reader's ARE important people!

The book I chose to review this month for The Artful Readers Club is
a collection of poems and short stories.

Now I know I am a bit of a Grammar Troll, but I get that people(even myself) make mistakes...I get that we regularly make typing errors, and that sometimes we just can't be fussed about correcting every last piece of syntax, BUT!!!!!
If you are going to publish a piece of writing that you expect people to pay for, you should make at least a reasonable effort to ensure it is "readable".
That is, after all, what proof reading is about.  You may not have the necessary skills or time to do this yourself. Even if you do, it is definitely worth getting someone else to read through your piece BEFORE publishing.
Within a few short pages of starting this book I found myself infuriated by the sheer lack of punctuation. In fact, I often didn't realise I had moved on to a different story as the title for it was merged into the last line of the previous piece. The spacing between sentences was chaotic and confusing, and some sentences were so long I had forgotten the point being made by the time I reached the end.
In the main story, the author continually changed from one tense to another mid sentence, and to be honest, on at least 3 occasions I planned to give up, BUT!!!!
I wanted to know what happened to the characters. The author created some wonderfully interesting protagonists, who I would love to have known better. I had to know if they had a happy ending, because she did make them real and likeable.
I found it extremely difficult to read this book. It actually gave me headache as I was constantly re-reading sections to make sure I had understood things properly, but it is filled with little gems, that if the author had taken the time to polish them, could have really sparkled.

I started my art project during my first "frustration break". At that point I had decided that if I had been reading a paper copy, I would have been tearing pages out of it. So I used some old book pages from my stash instead :D...
and decided to comfort myself making paper flowers...

I took my frustration out on them by spritzing them with water
 and scrunching them up.
Part of the short stories section of the book has a collection based on Death/Reapers, so during my second "frustration break" I stencilled a skull to add to my finished piece.
Darcy made a tutorial earlier this week for Paper Artsy, in which she made "patchwork paper".
I used some more book pages and inked them up, before cutting into random rectangles and pasting them onto a backing paper...
before cutting them into panels to fit the base "fan shape" I had cut from black card stock.
I over-stamped, faux stitched and mounted each panel before gluing in place.

Then it was just a matter of putting everything together :D
I added some sparkly details with Stickles...
and a sentiment I felt appropriate to the book itself.

In the end I was pleased I made the effort to finish this book, not for pride, but because it has the makings of some very very good stories.
Enjoy :D XXX

sometimes the pieces just all come together....

Yesterday whilst reading through my bloglist, several themes just blended together for me, and this is what I made..
A postcard from Skegness :D

Anything Goes Challenge #99 is By the Sea, Country View Crafts asked for "Quotes and Sayings", while Inspiration Avenue wanted Postcards. Sounded like the perfect combi to me :D
This is a photo of my hubby and youngest son following me to "the perfect spot" on the beach at Skegness...

I printed is out onto a 4 x 6 piece of card...

Stamped some letters out onto scrap card, inking the edges for a little definition...

then glued them onto the "postcard" to form the classic sea-side quote :D

I think this would be a lovely way of "scrapping" holiday pics, and you could write little memories on the back, as if you had been sending the cards home whilst on holiday.
It is also my "Piece a Week", and my Paper Saturdays challenge entry

Comfort zone...what comfort zone?

So how many times have you stepped outside your comfort zone and tried something new?
A friend recently asked me if I had ever tried working in muted colours, or colours that I wouldn't normally use.....I have a deep dislike for the pasty pink/grey/ white combi of the mid 80's....
So with both wellies firmly on my feet I waded in!
I used a palette knife and a previously worked canvas, and just mashed the paint all over it...
then walked away(yuk)
Literally...I went for a walk, and saw these...
and when I looked at the grotty canvas again..I saw these :D

I tried adding a foreground so they don't look like they are drifting in the sky...
but I'm not sure if it is starting to look a bit "twee" ?
A thin wash of viridian green to give it a bit of depth...
then I thought...."stop trying so hard...loosen up" So I went back to the palette knife and thick paint.
and this is where I am right now.
Don't know where this is leading, but I can feel the adventure growing :D

Wrapping paper...

Making presents for people is so much fun...but when it comes to wrapping them it is sometime difficult to find an appropriate paperso I decided to make my own.

For the base paper, I used a paper tablecloth. This pack of four was from Poundland...that means I can make 4 large sheets !!!! I bought white, but they do come in other block colours :D
each sheet is bigger than my desk top....
 (forgot to rotate pics)
The easiest way to begin decorating is to just select a few colours and press the pads gently onto the paper...(I saw Darcy do this not so long ago)
until you have covered the desired area.
Next I chose a wooden stamp that looked like carved leaves, and stamped that into each square.
before over stamping the whole piece with a Celtic knotted 5 pointed star from The Stamp Man, Aspects of Design collection(though I think it may be discontinued)
and now I have a simple , but personal paper to wrap my witchy gifts in :D, and enter into Manon's Paper Saturday Challenge :D
