Face no 17 for my 29 Faces for May

Sometimes I feel I need a break from intense images, and want to just play with markers :D

So I got out my Tyvek  Envelope journal and made a bright base with acrylic paint.

Next a very quick pencil sketch...

and attack of the Sharpie marker :D

I wondered if promarkers would work over acrylic... they did, but you have to be very careful as they reactivated the paint and wanted to "cake".

I love the simplicity of this piece and really enjoyed playing :D

Faerie folk

OMG!!! Just upgraded blogger and near scared myself to death making this post :( I'm sure I'll get used to it but got way confused when adding pics:S

Anyhoo, this weeks theme at The Butterfly Effect is Fairies...t'would be rude not to enter really :D

And Amy has posted a really fun video tutorial , Batik style wax resist technique!

So working in my Tyvek journal, I used Gauche paints to make a green base for my image...

and blotted with kitchen paper to get a nice textured surface

before making a brief out line sketch and dripping wax onto it.

Next I built up layers of yellow and purple and green.

After, melting the wax off again(layers of kitchen paper/newspaper and cool iron) I started adding detail to the figures and spots

I am enjoying working in a very loose style lately, which I am choosing to liken to impressionism (though I could be wrong lol)

I love the way the "drops" have a "solidity" about them.

Of course, being a Faerie, she needed wings, but I wanted to give an air of suspicion to the page, so I have given only a hint of their existence

So you tell me...is she protecting or stealing this human child?

Or is she a loving parent, shielding her offspring from a sudden downpour?

Baaaad Dog!

This week's theme at The Butterfly Effect is "RED". So I thought, easy peasy, I'll just choose page in my Tyvek Journal and...
paint it red :D Looked at for a while, couldn't see anything. Couldn't see Red Riding Hood anywhere....
then I turned the page and...baaad wolf appeared :D
all snarly and foaming with rage...started scrubing on colour with a dry stubby brush...
But it was all a bit cartoony for my taste...
so I got some white acrylic and a sea sponge and obliterated it. Then it looked better, and I added some splatters of red ink...and it looked much better. Even the title began to show itself...
I picked out the word "Dog", which seemed so clear to me and added the word "BAAAD"
Cos this dude really is "seeing red" :D XXX

Finding Face no22 :D

So today's post is a dig at the "Jeremy Clarkson" type male ego. I am going to make some sweeping statements so if they don't apply to you don't worry about them...but if you feel a twinge of recognition, yes, I'm laughing at you!!

Base layer, scraped on acrylics...

added a piece of blueprint paper (thanks Clare :D)... and spotted the words FRAME TYPE "B".
So this put a wickle idea in my otherwise empty girl brain...what would we be like if MEN had created WOMAN?

Well they would definitely have had more than one planning meeting, then gone off into separate workshops and ignored everybody else's ideas :/
SHE would have to have a sturdy metal frame..MEN like making stuff from metal...if you don't want a car taking apart in your drive, don't buy your boys Mechano!
...and SHE wouldn't need a complex "brain" type item...cos women are only interested in flowers and butterflies :S...

She would of course look ABSOLUTELY stunning on the outside...
..but SHE wouldn't be built to last, because MEN would have rushed everything, being in such a hurry to get finished and show off to their mates!
It wouldn't bother them if they had stuck the skin on a bit wonky, let's face it, smooth youthful skin is our hang-up not their's....
In fact, they would be quite happy when some of the paint started peeling off...

and the lovely shiny metal started showing through...

because that would prove SHE was entirely MAN made!!! :D
So SHE is my face no22 for 29 Faces in February :D
But on the side of fairness, if we made men, they would only come in about 4 models, and Sean Connery would be all of them lol :D XXX

Showers of Flowers

Decided to try making a "busy" background to work on, so I dripped and splashed alcohol inks and spritzed paint onto my page, before edging with blue acrylic paint. (there is lime green and pale blue in the background, but it hasn't shown on camera :S)

Next I outlined a quick face...
and shaded with blue pencil...
before picking out details, doodle style, with blue ink
couple of close-ups :D
