Week 37 of Darcy's Postcard Challenge, and Lady Ophelia Pendleton has rejoined her husband as he is touring GREECE.
" My dearest Lillian,
It was such a joy to spend some time with you again. Your new classroom looks wonderful, and your students are a credit to your hard work. Marcus is so lovely...and he does smile all the time! Young Geoffrey was so entertaining, and very well versed for a Butcher's Boy.
We are in Athens, and Richard is grateful that he does not have to paint the tiny violets for this postcard. His smile was as wide as Marcus' when Miss Francesca and I arrived last evening.
Today we visited some of the ancient ruins. I find it difficult to understand why the Greek people have allowed these buildings to be destroyed so. There were bits of statues everywhere, such a shame. The people themselves seem rather friendly, surprising really, considering the amount of times they seem to have been invaded. Looking around, it is hard to believe that this is the birthplace of so many brilliant minds.
Your affectionate friend, Ophelia xxx"
" My darling Ophelia,
I feel much better having seen how well you look. You always were a strong healthy child, but one can never be too careful.
I do not believe that the Greek people trashed these magnificent monuments themselves. More that Lord Elgin, amongst others, took advantage of a war-torn state, and committed acts that can only be described as "vandalism". I am in agreement with Lord Byron when he penned these words...
"Dull is the eye that will not weep to see
Thy walls defaced, thy mouldering shrines removed
By British hands, which it has best behoved
To guard those relics ne'er to be restored.
Curst be the hour when from their isles they roved,
And once again thy hapless bosom gored,
And snatch'd thy shrinking gods to northern climes abhorred!"
Geoffrey is quite smitten with you, and has asked that I tell you he got 10 out of 10 in his spelling test again this week. And do tell Sir Richard that I completely understand about the postcards he sent.
Your ever devoted friend, Lillian xxx"
So now I'm back on track with the cards and story...just the pages of my book to catch up on :D
If you missed my catch-up post as to what Ophelia has been up to for the past 3 weeks, you can read it HERE
