Being busy is a good thing...

At least it means when I remember to blog I
will have something to show you lol :D
Obviously the time of year dictates why I
am busy....
made loads of christmas cards to send...
didn't take any photos doh!
Made 3 lots of preserves
( a few bottles of Crabapple brandy and
Blackcurrant Gin nom)
but mostly we have been redecorating.
Our sitting room now has a proper
fireplace (though the fire isn't "plumbed in yet")
I bought some flickering fake candles to
give it a cosy feel for now :D
The internal brickwork is original
but the rest is wallpaper.
Not a bad match really :D

enjoy, stay warm and see you
soon

Deary Deery me....

As promised, I am sharing my process for decorating
the papier-mache Deer in the photo for my
Crafyhazelnut's DT post :D

I wanted to decoupage him, but didn't have the right paper...
(I know, hard to believe with the size of my stash!)
I wanted him to look grungy and old, but like he had been
shiny and new once upon a time...
I took a piece of red dotty paper and grunged it up,
using TH Oxide inks and gesso...
which I then tore into tiny bits...
before gluing randomly onto the deer.
Once covered I gessoed his antlers
and face...
and covered him with a wash of burnt umber
to "age" him.
His hooves and antlers are painted with metallic copper
craft paint, and his face and antlers have a subtle coating
of glitter paint (both Martha Stewart).
I love how he turned out...
he looks and feels like that ancient Christmas
decoration that your Gran let you play with as
a special treat . All grubby and dented but smothered
in Love :D
Hope your Yuletide/Christmas is filled with Love...
even if it is looking a bit old and shabby these days XXX

I am sharing him in the following challenges;

Busy week....

Sorry for the long absence...Hubby took the week off to stand at the bottom of the stairs while I balanced on ladders to finally wallpaper the stairwell...
Still got to paint the woodwork (5 door frames/stairs and handrails)
but loving the bright sunniness for the flowery paper :D
After a lifetime of "boything" stuffs, I think "flowery" is well over due...
Saturday morning we decided to reclaim some of our youthful silliness...
dragged the teenthing out of bed at 6.30 am, and drove to the coast for breakfast.
Got there before the Bank Holiday rush. Seafront cafe just opening for breakfast(they allow dogs in too), had a lovely walk on the beach before sharing a bag of fresh donuts and home for lunch.
First long trip for Roo (2 hours eachway) but she was the perfect passenger and loved the beach :D
As to crafting.... going to a wedding on Friday.
Don't feel like wearing a hat, so made myself a fancy headband to match my frothy, flowery frock...
 it is sooooo swoooshy!!!
 and to finish..
a sneak peek at the starting phase of my creation for
with Annie Walls.
This years theme is "Insects" mwahahaha...
*I am counting Arachnids...cos we all do*
Will be back soon :D

Old into new ...

Last week I updated my FBook page with an image of a chest of drawers I had refurbished, and a young friend asked if I would run through the technique as it is something she feels she could do herself...
and she can..it is really easy with modern products :D

I had this old 1930's utility piece which was useful, but getting really shabby.
The first thing I did was give it a quick sand to break the varnished surface. I made sure to use a damp cloth to wipe up the dust as I went (just to be on the safe side)

Next a simple coat of matt emulsion. I wanted the brush strokes to show as this adds texture through the tissue I used later, but you can make this layer as perfect as you want.
If your using a thick opaque paper the paint layer won't be seen, but I was using a very translucent paper by Papermania called Nature's Gallery.
 Now the magic ingredient...
A product from First Edition, Deco Mache glue AND varnish.)I got mine from The Range for £4.99)
In the "old days" you would glue on the paper, let it dry, varnish(with stinky varnish) let that dry , sand back then varnish again til you reached a satisfactory finish...
This stuff (and I'm sure there are other makes available) you do it all in one go!
Paint a layer of the "paste" onto the primed surface, gentle lay on bits of tissue, and paint over with the same "paste".
Be careful with the wet tissue as it will tear easily, so use gently strokes over the top.
Continue to add a bit at a time until the whole piece is covered.
I did the same routine with the draws, making sure all edges were smoothed down.
I let the first layer dry thoroughly before applying another coat of the "paste" over the entire surface.
They recommend 3 coats (no sanding required in between), but as this is going in the bedroom I was happy to just use 2.
This is a large chest of drawers, and I only used one pot of paste(with a little left over) So not expensive at all. It is also non toxic, and the smell is like wet emulsion, so not horrible to wok with at all.

As you all know I am a tad crazy, so I recommend trying a smaller project first lol.
And you don't have to use tissue paper, any thin patterned paper will do...even book pages(is eyeing up an old book case with that in mind).
An old set of nesting tables would probably make a good first project...or a simple tea tray.

Enjoy :D XXX

I has a big heart....

I love folksy artsy home decor, so I bought one of those paper flower wreath kits...
but you know I couldn't just MAKE it lol
I made a BIG one
(original size in middle )

I used some dies, a pile of scraps and my Grand Caliber to cut out a few bigger flowers to layer up
and a hot glue gun I got for a couple of pounds from a discount shop to stick them to the base...

Looks well lush :D

I may just make up the small one and dangle it from the bottom :D
