"That's all" she wrote "...for now."

SHRINKING VIOLET - UNCHAINED part 3

" TWO HOURS!!! ....it took me TWO hours to work this little treasure  out of the root system!"

"I thought you said you couldn't kill Privet?" Hubby joked.

"Well you can't...but no need to stress it too much when it does such a wonderful job of protecting us."

"So...what s it?"

"I don't know. It is just gorgeous. It's small...but quite heavy...could be gold I suppose. I haven't had chance to clean it up yet."

"Well make sure you put some gloves on before you start messing with it. Goodness only knows what might be inside it. How old do you think it is?"

"The hedge can't have been here that long. These houses have only been here since the 30's, though this area was a meadow before that...so the box could have been buried anytime I suppose."
...

Days later, after much delicate brushing and chipping, I could see that the box was beautifully made though much defaced from being buried so long. It was a warm yellowish metal, but showing signs of oxidation.

"So ...not gold then." Hubby commented.

"Nope, probably copper, but still pretty."

"What is that lump on the side?"

"It looks like a small Skull and Crossbones to me..."

"POISON?"

"Not necessarily...more likely to be some sort of death momento."

"And you don't mind handling that?" Hubby always was a bit squeamish about death.

"GLOVES!" was all he said as he left the room.

"I'm not going to open it!" I called after him.

"YET" was his response...he knows me too well.
...

"Now...how upset are you going to be with me for opening you?"...I often talk to inanimate objects, you never know who may have handled them before...or what kind of energy they may have been in contact with.
"You don't appear to have a locking mechanism, but you do have a lid. I promise to be gentle and respectful." I said as I carefully tried to work the lid loose.
Again it was a long slow process, and maybe I should have taken the hint by then. Each millimetre of movement meant more careful cleaning as the soil seemed to have penetrated the seal.
"There probably isn't much left of your original contents if moisture has been seeping in all this time"
The pile of cotton buds I was using to clear away the dirt was getting ridiculous.
Then..the satisfying "Thhupp" sound of the vacuum breaking as the lid came free....

and that's when things got really weird.
...
to be continued.

  4. Oh blimey I'm now imagining magic genies, puffs of smoke, loud bangs, eerie music and fireworks or maybe there's a soft cushion with a dried up rose, perhaps a ring or ancient bottle of perfume, perhaps there's ancient parchment and a story to be read. See how you've got my imagination going? Have a great weekend xxx
